Individuals should consider to take advantage of this coverage if they suffer from vision related problems.

Vision insurance is a type of health insurance policy that usually cover a routine eye examination. There is a difference between annual eye examinations and medical related eye  examination. In general, the reason for a visit to the ophthalmologist determines whether the visit is billed to the medical or to the vision insurance plan. For example, a visiting the doctor to get prescription glasses for astigmatism falls under the category of vision insurance coverage, while visiting for conjunctivitis is usually classified as part of health insurance coverage.

Individual vision insurance plans can vary in the type of coverage that they provide. Although, almost all provide coverage of an annual routine eye examination, some will cover a year’s supply of both prescription lenses and contact lens, while others will cover only one. Some plans cover only a percentage of the fees charged by the optometrists and the ophthalmologists, with most vision plans limiting the total amount that will be paid on your behalf.

It is important to understand the advantages of the vision plan that being offered by your employer before deciding whether or not to obtain it. If you already have an existing eye doctor, then be sure that he/she is included in the  network to avoid paying additional cost. Be certain that you know what fees your doctor charge you at every visit. For example, many doctors will charge a separate refraction fees as part of an eye examination to  determine new prescription lenses. Most vision plans do not cover this fees, they will only cover the exam itself
